how I use it with atheists.
John 20:30,31 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. (nkjv)
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (nkjv)
In many years of ministering God's Word to people in Bible exhibits at fairs and other public events, I have talked to many professing atheists. Some have been curt and uninterested in the least, and a few have given me the privilege of presenting the gospel message to them, but I have never had one turn down an offer similar to the following.
I remember talking with a young student from England at the Peach & Melon Festival in De Leon, TX. He was was courteous and attentive as he listened to the Gospel presentation. Then, looking me straight in the eye, he told me he was an atheist. As I was silently praying for him, I felt prompted to answer him something like this.
"Thank you for letting me know this. I appreciate your letting me talk to you. May I give you a little booklet which is a portion from the Bible. This was written by one of Jesus' best friends, who probably knew Jesus almost as well as Jesus' Mother did."
Turning to John 20:0,31 I had him read it. Then I told him, "Let me suggest that you read it all the way through to see what it says about Jesus. Then if you are still interested, read it again to focus on what Jesus said, Himself. After that if you are still interested, read it one more time focusing on people's reaction to Jesus. You will find that some accepted Him and His message, while others not only rejected Him, but actually killed Him. So I am not saying you will end up believing like I do, but I am saying that if you do, you will have a basis for believing." He reached out for the Gospel of John in my hand and looking me in the eye said "I can do that!"
John 3:18,19 says "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." (nkjv)
Whenever I think of him I thank the Lord for giving me the opportunity to give this young man God's word back then.
And I praise Him today for the way He brings people like this young man into my life, giving me the privelege of talking with them.
I pray that God will prepare my heart every day so He can use me.
I pray that He will prepare someone else's heart today so they will be ready to hear the Gospel.
I Ask Him to bring us together.
Then I spend the day looking for the prepared heart(s).
If you pray for me today, ask Him to prompt me to start looking the minute my feet hit the floor in the morning. Not to wait until I get to a Bible Exhibit and then start looking.
By His Grace
May Jesus Christ be lifted up
